Tardive Dyskinesia Symptoms
Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) has been linked to chronic use of metoclopramide or Reglan, a drug used for gastrointestinal disorders.There are many types of abnormal movements associated with tardive dyskinesia. These include:
• Involuntary and repetitive movements of the body;
• Grimacing, tongue twitching and protrusion;
• Lip smacking, puckering and pursing and blinking, and raising eyebrows;
• Rapid movements of the arms, legs and trunk;
• Involuntary movements of the fingers as though playing an invisible guitar or piano.
Sometimes the movements are very slight and barely noticeable to an outside observer. Sometimes the movement disorder is severe and disabling. All of the abnormal movements are involuntary-i.e., they happen even when you don’t want them to happen. These movements usually stop during sleep but can get much worse when you are anxious or under stress. |
