Tardive Dyskinesia

This website was created to provide Tardive Dyskinesia patients and their families and friends with up-to-date information about Tardive Dyskinesia (TD). We have the latest information on TD, its symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment. We have also gathered vital information on coping with the personal, pain and financial effects of TD, which may be difficult to deal with without the proper preparation.

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is also known as Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS). TD is neurological syndrome and is a serious and potentially irreversible movement disorder. Tardive Dyskinesia is characterized by abnormal muscle movements that are repetitive, involuntary, and purposeless such as tongue thrusting and facial twitches. TD is caused from the long-term use of neuroleptic drugs generally prescribed for psychiatric disorders, as well as for some gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. Such drugs include Reglan, Octamide, Maxolon or the generic form metoclopramide.

Chronic use of Reglan has been linked to tardive dyskinesia, which may include involuntary and repetitive movements of the body, even after the drugs are no longer taken. Features of TD disorder may include grimacing, tongue protrusion, lip smacking, puckering and pursing, and rapid eye blinking. The symptoms of TD have often been confused with Parkinson’s Disease because of the similarities. If you have been experiencing any symptoms associated with TD, call now and we can provide you with more info. 1-800-923-6376.

Treatment of tardive dyskinesia is highly individualized and after the first sign of symptoms and a diagnosis is made, treatment should be undergone. The Treatment Options section describes the different types of treatments. Treatment may include discontinuing the causative drug. In our Financial Assistance section, we discuss how patients and their families may be helped with medical bills and financial concerns. To navigate our site, use the links to the left.
